On Dec. 26, 1964, head coach Red Auerbach needed to make an adjustment to the Celtics' starting lineup after forward Tommy Heinsohn suffered an injury in the team's Christmas Day game. When coach Auerbach elected to insert forward Willie Naulls into the starting five, NBA history was made.

An all Black starting team would have been an impossibility until the start of the 1963-1964 season, when the Celtics broke the gentlemen’s agreement (or whatever it was) and acquired Naulls from The San Francisco Warriors. The other starters for the Celtics in 1963-1964 and 1964-1965, were Satch Sanders, K.C. Jones, Sam Jones, and Bill Russell.

The Celtics were on the road to play a regular season game with the St. Louis Hawks when starting power forward Tommy Heinsohn ended up a scratch due to injury.
